The Indiana Pacers brokered one of the biggest deals of this year’s NBA trade deadline, effectively shipping Domantas Sabonis to the Kings for Tyrese Haliburton. It was a shrewd move that allows this team to potentially rebuild on an expedited timeline.
In many ways, Haliburton is a younger version of current Pacers guard Malcolm Brogdon. Both are heady, high IQ combo guards who provide both on-and-off ball value. For the Pacers, however, the best value Brogdon can offer may come on the trade market.
Their front office may not see it that way. They are notoriously averse to anything that resembles tanking. Trading Brogdon for a package that brings less win-now value may not be in their wheelhouse. It may also be so obviously prudent that they can’t resist it.
Brogdon’s skillset is redundant alongside Haliburton’s. Sure, the two could co-exist, but the Pacers should be putting the ball in the younger guard’s hands at every opportunity.

By the time this team is ready to compete again, Brogdon should be well-aged out of his prime.
