Paul George and James Harden have kept the Los Angeles Clippers in contention in their first-round NBA playoff series against the Dallas Mavericks despite the absence of Kawhi Leonard. The Clippers managed to even the series at 2-2 after a tense 116-111 victory in Game 4, overcoming a massive 31-point lead slip.

“We knew they would make a run. But also, we didn’t think we’d come into this building and be up 31 points either,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said. “So I told our team, just get the win, however you’ve got to get it. In the playoffs, it don’t matter how you win.”

Leonard, suffering from right knee inflammation, remains sidelined, having missed the first game and participated in the subsequent Dallas wins. His return is uncertain as the teams prepare for Game 5 in Los Angeles.

The Mavericks, powered by Kyrie Irving‘s 40 points, nearly turned the game around, including a layup by Irving for a 105-104 lead late in the game, the Mavericks’ first lead since the opening quarter.

Despite his knee issues, Luka Doncic notched a triple-double with 29 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. He entered as a game-time decision due to right knee soreness that has lingered since Game 3.

“It’s hurting, obviously. But it shouldn’t be an excuse,” Doncic said. “Just came out sloppy. We’ve got to be way better than that.”

George and Harden both scored 33 points, with George adding 26 in the first half alone. Harden’s performance included a pivotal three-point play late in the game, securing the Clippers’ win.

“I’m blessed to be able to change it up and be a facilitator or a scorer,” Harden said. “My mindset coming to this team was doing whatever it takes to win and get to the end goal. Whether that’s scoring or facilitating, I think it goes possession by possession and game by game.”

The Clippers set a franchise playoff record for most three-pointers in a quarter with eight in the first, establishing a dominant early game lead. Despite the Mavericks’ rally, LA held on, setting the stage for a crucial next game in the series.

As the series shifts back to Los Angeles, both teams will look to leverage their star players’ strengths while addressing weaknesses exposed in the thrilling Game 4.
