Does this trade make sense for the Atlanta Hawks?
Giving up Danilo Gallinari is not much of a loss in this trade since the Hawks would be receiving Eric Gordon, a better offensive and defensive option on the wing, but the question here is if Atlanta is willing to part with a first-round pick next year.
This is the Hawks’ only 2023 first-round pick, however, the 2022 first-round pick they own from Charlotte in 2022 is not expected to convey, which would mean that they would now be receiving the Hornets’ 2023 first-round pick with Top-16 protections on it.
Technically speaking, the Hawks can look at this trade in the offseason as basically giving up “one of two” first-round picks they would have in 2023, and assuming they envision Eric Gordon helping them make the playoffs, Atlanta would not really need a reason to want to hold onto their 2023 first-round pick.
Atlanta is in a position right now as a franchise where they need to be careful with their cap space/tax line, as well as find ways to add high-level talents to help them compete in the playoffs.
