Does this trade make sense for the Detroit Pistons?
Trading Jerami Grant is something that has been on Detroit’s mind for quite some time now, but they did not look to do so at the trade deadline because the Pistons were not getting the exact value they were looking for.
The Pistons at the very least were willing to discuss a trade centered around a lottery-protected first-round pick and a young talent, a source told NBA Analysis Network. However, Detroit was never able to find a team willing to sacrifice a high draft pick for Jerami Grant, which is why they ultimately held onto him.
The Hawks do not have much to bargain with here and while adding Kevin Huerter and De’Andre Hunter adds two relatively young pieces to Detroit’s roster, the upside here is slightly limited.
Kevin Huerter is nothing more than a perimeter shooting threat for Detroit and while De’Andre Hunter has a chance to grow into more of a two-way threat on the wing, the Pistons can likely better their efforts in a trade for Grant around the 2022 NBA Draft, getting the draft picks that they would like for him.

They are in no rush to make a big move like trading Jerami Grant and there is no trade that the Pistons can make that will help them eclipse 30 wins next season.
While they are expected to be better than the team they are this season, the Pistons are still far out from being anything special in the Eastern Conference. Gathering more future assets is the best thing they can do for themselves and while this is not the best trade they can make involving Jerami Grant, Detroit should pursue it if they view Kevin Huerter and De’Andre Hunter as long-term building blocks.
