Does this trade make sense for the Boston Celtics?

Marcus Smart has meant a lot to the city of Boston and the Celtics organization over the years, but it could be a “smart” move for the Celtics to look to trade him at the deadline this season. 

His upside is limited at this point and other than being a defensive-stopper, what value does Smart really bring to the table for the Celtics? 

For his career, he has shot just 31.9% from deep, he can be very turnover prone on offense and Marcus Smart has not been able to fill the void that the Celtics currently have in their backcourt at the point guard position. Adding a third star to go along with Tatum and Brown remains high on Boston’s “to-do” list, but that is something they will address in the offseason. 

Malik Beasley is a player Boston has had on their radar for the last few seasons and given his catch-and-shoot abilities on the perimeter, he could be a really solid fit next to the Celtics’ two All-Stars.

Trading Marcus Smart opens up more playing time for Payton Pritchard, a young guard the team is high on as a perimeter shooting threat and while they did intend to trade him at the deadline when they signed him, Boston could still keep Dennis Schroder around and utilize him through the end of the season as their starting point guard. 

This is not a bad trade at all for the Celtics and the best part about it, besides freeing up some long-term cap space, is that they open up options for themselves. Having draft capital is vital in the league today for contending teams in order to add talent and heading into the offseason, this trade would leave the Celtics with a total of seven draft picks through next year.
