Celtics Acquire The Shooting Depth They Need With Eric Gordon

Boston is expected to look to trade away guys like Dennis Schroder and Josh Richardson, but they are also going to do their best to replace them with high-level secondary talents.

 Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown cannot carry the Celtics on their own and with Boston ranking 28th in the league in bench points right now, they could really use an impactful veteran with a vast amount of playoff experience like Eric Gordon. 

Now in his 14th NBA season, Gordon is nearing the end of his career and is owed a lot of money, but he has been effective and one of the best three-point shooters this season.

In 44 games this year, Eric Gordon has averaged 14.3 points, 3.1 assists and has shot 42% from three-point range.

Convincing the Rockets to trade Gordon though could wind up being difficult, as ESPN’s Tim MacMahon stated recently that the team is not going to want to just “dump” him and that Houston wants to receive “fair value” in return for him. 

Having multiple trade exceptions as well, Eric Gordon may not be the only player the Celtics could target ahead of the trade deadline, but he is certainly someone that could serve as their No. 3 option next to Tatum and Brown. 

Through the years in Houston, Gordon has played alongside James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul and other high-level talents that have gone to the Rockets in pursuit of trying to win a title. Unfortunately for them, the Rockets never made it out of the Western Conference Finals, but Eric Gordon was always a key scoring weapon for his team. 

With the Celtics, Eric Gordon would continue being a high-level shooting threat, he would make an impact defensively and most importantly, he would be a key scoring weapon for the Celtics to utilize off-the-bench, which is currently one of the worst in the league in terms of scoring output.

Committing to Eric Gordon and the guaranteed $37.8M that he is owed through next season is a risk for Boston, but they do not have many choices heading into the trade deadline if they are to make something of this year.
