Darius Garland Gets Backcourt Help In Cleveland Through Dinwiddie

Spencer Dinwiddie trade talk is a little surprising, especially after the team just signed him to a three-year, $54M deal this past offseason. According to The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor, the Wizards have explored opportunities to move Spencer Dinwiddie at the trade deadline because he looks like a “shell of his former self” and “his teammates do not want him there.”

This is pretty big news coming out of Washington, especially since they are 24-27 and slipping fast in the Eastern Conference standings. Should Spencer Dinwiddie actually be available in trade talks, the Cleveland Cavaliers should be the team showing the most interest.

It is possible that the Cavaliers do not have the “win-now” assets that Washington would want in return for Spencer Dinwiddie, but Cleveland has a need for another high-level guard in their backcourt with Collin Sexton and Ricky Rubio being out for the year.

Since Rubio went down with a torn ACL, the Cavaliers’ front-office and GM Koby Altman have been looking to leverage his $17.8M contract this season in trade talks.

There has been very little interest, but Rubio is in the final year of his deal and being packaged with some draft picks could make a rebuilding team interested in taking on his salary.

The Wizards do not view themselves as a rebuilding franchise right now, but it is hard to envision them being anything more than a first-round exit in the playoffs, that is if they make the playoffs at this rate!

Packaging Ricky Rubio, Dylan Windler, one first-round pick and one second-round pick for Spencer Dinwiddie and a salary-filler in Anthony Gill could be of interest to the Wizards if they are truly looking to trade Dinwiddie within the next week.

Darius Garland has played at an All-Star-level in the backcourt this season and the Cavaliers are right in the thick of things playoff-wise in the Eastern Conference, but adding another backcourt option like Spencer Dinwiddie is something they would like to do. Having a facilitator like Spencer Dinwiddie takes a lot of pressure off of Darius Garland to have to make every play for this offense, allowing him to be more of a versatile scoring option coming off screens.

Spencer Dinwiddie is costly and acquiring him could likely mean the end of Collin Seton’s time in Cleveland due to salary restraints, but he is certainly the impactful point guard that this team is lacking right now.
