Suns Add A Little More Depth At Forward Positions With Robert Covington
The Trail Blazers are on the verge of rebuilding this season and Robert Covington is likely to be the first player they trade due to the fact that he is in the final year of his contract.
Making $12.9M this season and set to become an unrestricted free agent, Covington is going to be looked at as a “one-year rental” type player heading into the trade deadline, which is why the Phoenix Suns should be interested in adding him.
The Suns were two games from winning their first title in franchise history last season and this season, they are currently an NBA-best 41-9 on the year. Devin Booker and Chris Paul make up arguably the best backcourt in the league and with a little more two-way depth at both forward positions, the Suns could turn themselves into even more of an unstoppable force than they already are heading into the postseason.
The Suns are the best team in the league right now and do not need to make a change to their roster, but they are about $7M under the tax line this season and could move some non-core players and a draft pick to acquire Robert Covington from the Trail Blazers.

In 48 games this season, Robert Covington is averaging 7.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 1.3 blocks and is shooting 34.3% from three-point range. Being a highly skilled two-way forward in this league, Covington had been playing very well as of late for the Trail Blazers and has shot about 36.6% from three-point range since the new year.
Not too long ago, Covington earned All-Defensive Team honors and he has averaged at least one steal and one block per game in four of the last five seasons.
With the ability to play small-forward, power-forward and even some center in smaller lineups, Robert Covington is the perfect kind of frontcourt talent for the Phoenix Suns to pursue, especially at the expense of guys like Dario Saric and Jalen Smith.
He would be a perfect complimentary player next to Jae Crowder and Deandre Ayton in this frontcourt and being a “3-and-D” type of player, the Suns would be gaining yet another weapon that they can utilize in many different ways.
