Does this trade make sense for the Cleveland Cavaliers?
Landing Bradley Beal certainly looks like a good move for the Cleveland Cavaliers, but quite honestly, they really do not need him to continue the success they have been having. Beal is going to be eligible for a new contract soon that could pay at least $180M through four seasons.
Does Cleveland really want to be tied down to this kind of contract, disabling them from being able to add other talented players to their roster?
Here is the thing with the Cavaliers, they really do not need to make too many drastic changes to their roster right now. Obviously flipping Sexton, Rubio and Love for Beal is a move that they should accept, do not get me wrong on that, but they should not want to tie themselves down to another big contract situation.
Their young backcourt duo of Darius Garland and Collin Sexton have played really well together when healthy, so we could see Cleveland try to build off their success from this season by agreeing to a smaller, long-term deal with Sexton in the offseason.
LATEST NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Should Wizards Worry About Bradley Beal Entering Free Agency?
The possibility of targeting someone like Bradley Beal certainly exists for the Cavaliers this season, but they would be much better off trying to leverage Ricky Rubio’s “dead-weight” contract for some other secondary scorers like Caris LeVert, Harrison Barnes or someone like Terrence Ross.
It seems like Cleveland is going to make one or two more moves ahead of the trade deadline to add talent to their roster this season, but expectations for going after an All-Star right now should be lowered.
