Will James Wiseman see a large role when he returns?

While Klay Thompson is expected to make his return Sunday against the Cleveland Cavaliers, there is still no timetable for James Wiseman’s potential return to the court. The Golden State Warriors have said that they are happy with his progress, but he suffered a slight setback a month ago and was recently put into the league’s health and safety protocols.

Meniscus injuries are tough to judge, as Jaren Jackson Jr. suffered a torn meniscus in the NBA Bubble and did not return until eight-and-a-half months later, but Wiseman will also have to get up-to-speed in terms of conditioning.

The Warriors are a championship threat once again this season and as a result, they are not going to be looking to get their young guys as much playing time as possible. James Wiseman is going to be in a similar situation to that of rookies Moses Moody and Jonathan Kuminga in the sense that they will all spend a lot of time in practices and in the G-League trying to better their skills.

Golden State remains high on Wiseman’s potential and they still believe he can be a franchise-altering talent down the line, but right now, it is hard to imagine that he will return and jump right into the Warriors’ main rotation.

When he is 100% good-to-go, maybe James Wiseman will enter the starting lineup, but it is hard to envision him eclipsing 20 minutes in a game this season.

Kevon Looney has played his role to perfection with the Golden State Warriors this season and with Draymond Green being able to slide over to the center position, Wiseman will likely spend a large chunk of this season continuing to develop.
