2. Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks, for the time being, look like they are going to pair Jalen Brunson with Luka Doncic as their starting backcourt. That duo has a barely positive net rating, so there could be some pressure, especially defensively, for the rest of the starting five to improve.
Adding some more versatile defenders to the mix wouldn’t hurt and Robert Covington would qualify. Covington has experience at both forward spots and in the frontcourt, even playing minutes at center.
He could pair with any of the Mavericks big men or move down to the small forward spot if they go bigger with Kristaps Porzingis and a center. Offensively, Covington can space the floor with his 3-point shooting so he wouldn’t clog things up if he moved into more of a wing role.
3-and-D players surrounding Doncic are what helps him thrive, making Covington a logical target. If Dallas isn’t able to land a secondary ball-handler, the role that Brunson is now filling, adding more shooting and defense certainly wouldn’t hurt.

While Covington isn’t as big of a name or as impactful as players such as Jerami Grant or Myles Turner, he would cost a fraction of the price as an expiring contract.
