Building a package for a superstar player is always difficult. Balancing out what the team surrendering the superstar would want in return and what the other team is willing to pay is not easy. The Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks are unlikely trade partners, but this could be the framework of a deal.
New York comes away with the crown jewel, landing Karl-Anthony Towns. He becomes the centerpiece of their team. Jake Layman, Josh Okogie and Jordan McLaughlin are added so that the Timberwolves don’t have to make as many moves to get to the 15-man roster maximum.
The Timberwolves may be the only team the Knicks have trade talks with that may not require RJ Barrett to be involved. They already have their long-term answer on the wing in Anthony Edwards and could be more interested in rounding the roster out around him.
They do that in this deal, bringing in young players in Obi Toppin, Immanuel Quickley, Mitchell Robinson and Kevin Knox II. Nerlens Noel and Evan Fournier are included to help match salaries, but Alec Burks, Kemba Walker or Derrick Rose could be swapped in if the Timberwolves prefer one of them over Noel. Removing Fournier would require two players in his place.

The first-round picks provide plenty of flexibility for Minnesota. They would have three chances to add a young, cost-controlled player to the mix or flip those picks for established talent.
