How This Trade Impacts Minnesota Timberwolves

There is very little chance that the Minnesota Timberwolves move on from Karl-Anthony Towns any time soon. When the team is healthy, they have played well this season. Building things up around him, Anthony Edwards and D’Angelo Russell is likelier than them parting ways with Towns.

But, if they do reach the point that a trade needs to be made or Towns requests a trade, they would be looking for a haul. This may not be enough to get them to bite, as they could request RJ Barrett. But, with Edwards locked into the shooting guard spot, it may not be a sticking point for them as much as other teams the Knicks negotiate with.

Looking for a long-term option at power forward, the Timberwolves fill it with Obi Toppin. He looks ready for an expanded role, but as long as he is behind Julius Randle, it won’t come with the Knicks.

Mitchell Robinson could be the long-term answer at the center spot alongside Toppin, with Nerlens Noel providing a veteran experience for a young team. Kevin Knox II is an improved 3-point shooter but needs a change of scenery to recognize his potential.

Evan Fournier is someone that is included for salary matching purposes. He could help space the floor for a Timberwolves team that is ranked 22nd in the NBA in 3-point percentage.

Immanuel Quickley will also help improve that number and is another young, high upside backcourt option for the team to build around.

With all of the young players now in the mix, the Timberwolves will have a chance to consolidate sooner than later for an established star if they choose to. The three first-round picks they are receiving from the Knicks will also help them acquire top-shelf talent down the road.
