Does this trade make sense for the San Antonio Spurs?
Much like how this trade does not really positively impact the Lakers, it is hard to pinpoint exactly where the Spurs get value in this trade. Maybe getting out of White’s long-term contract is advantageous to a rebuilding team, but he seems to be a big part of their rebuild this season.
Derrick White ranks third on the team in scoring, second in assists, third in field goals attempted per game and his usage rate of 20.6% is the 4th highest on the team, minimum 30 games played.
Maybe he is not a long-term building block for this franchise, but bringing in Talen Horton-Tucker and Kendrick Nunn just adds more question marks to this roster.
Having Dejounte Murray as their primary facilitator and ball-handler, it is hard to envision Kendrick Nunn being an impactful off-the-ball guard like White is and Talen Horton-Tucker has been extremely inconsistent this season.

Some games, Horton-Tucker goes for upwards of 20 points, but more often than not, he is scoring below 10 points per game and really struggling to be effective on the perimeter.
If the Spurs trade away youth and parts of their core group, they will do so to find an identity and improve their roster immediately.

Acquiring Horton-Tucker and Nunn does not do this for them, which is why they would pass on the opportunity to make this trade with the Lakers.
