Does this trade make sense for the New York Knicks?
Solving all of their problems this season is going to be a difficult task for Leon Rose, Scott Perry and this New York Knicks front-office, but Caris LeVert would not hurt this organization in any way. He has one year left on his contract after this season, so the Knicks would not be tied down to him long-term, and his contract is very affordable.
Only making $17.5M this season and about $18.8M next season, New York could still pursue some big names in the offseason and have enough cap space moving forward to continue adding talent to their roster.
Kemba Walker has been very underwhelming to this organization and the big question the Knicks need to ask themselves is if Julius Randle is “the guy” moving forward. Seeing as they just invested a lot of money into him and he still is their primary facilitator and scorer, it is safe to assume the answer would be “yes,” which is why Obi Toppin’s value is low to this franchise.
Moving Toppin now, along with a less valuable first-round pick via Dallas in 2023, for Caris LeVert presents more of a “win-now” opportunity for this franchise.

The New York Knicks are in a position to contend in the Eastern Conference, but they need a little bit more talent on their roster to do so. LeVert can give them this extra production to not only make a playoff push, but possibly create an intriguing situation for another All-Star in the offseason to join the team.
