Does this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?
Buddy Hield would be an excellent addition to the Dallas Mavericks this season and moving forward given his three-point shooting abilities, but they need a lot more than another three-point shooter. This team needs another All-Star and they will not be real playoff contenders until they can get one.
Luka Doncic can only do so much for this team and while Kristaps Porzingis has stepped up early on this season, durability and consistency are two major problems with him.
Porzingis would be much better being the No. 3 option on this team, so what the Mavericks really need is a No. 2 option.
Maybe they can move Tim Hardaway Jr. in a trade package for someone like Domantas Sabonis from the Pacers, but if they are unable to land another All-Star, going after someone like Hield is an excellent pivot option.

Because of how good of a three-point shooter he is, Buddy Hield will always have trade value, regardless of what his contract is.
He could help Dallas this season and whether or not they make a deep playoff run, he would be another trade asset they could add to their roster in attempts to land a third All-Star in the offseason.
There is a wide talent gap between the Mavericks and other teams in the Western Conference like the Suns, Warriors, Clippers, and Nuggets when they are all at full-strength.
Buddy Hield certainly pulls the Dallas Mavericks closer to being on the same level as some of those teams, but he is not someone that can create space and opportunities for himself.

All the weight of this franchise is still on the shoulders of Luka Doncic, which is why trading for Hield is not the best move this team can make, but still one of the better ones they can make ahead of the trade deadline this season.
