How This Trade Impacts Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons, if they even entertain the idea of trading Jerami Grant, are going to have a high asking price. He is the team’s best player, but they have to take a big picture approach sooner than later and realize it is better long-term to move on from Grant sooner than later.

The team isn’t winning with Grant currently and is unlikely to develop into contenders anytime soon. So, capitalizing on Grant’s trade value when it is as high as it has been, makes sense for Detroit’s front office.

The Pistons would likely want to snag some first-round picks in any deal for Grant, but they have to come away feeling good about this haul from the Hawks. Cam Reddish and Onyeka Okongwu have immense upside and fit the timeline of the other young players currently on the roster.

Reddish has the look of your prototypical two-way wing. He stands 6’8” with a 7’1” wingspan and has the tools to be a versatile, lockdown defender. The No. 10 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft has made strides offensively this season as well. Finally healthy, he is knocking down 37.7 percent of his 3-point attempts.

Okongwu, like Reddish, has dealt with some injuries. But he could be a difference-maker with his athleticism and mobility on both ends of the court. His per-36 minute stats as a rookie, 13.7 points on excellent efficiency, 9.8 rebounds and two blocks, show how much upside he has.

Delon Wright can provide some veteran leadership for the young guys on the team, especially if Cory Joseph is moved in a deal between now and the deadline. This would be a solid return for a Pistons team that looks destined for another top-five pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.
