How This Trade Impacts Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks have fallen well short of the expectations they had set for themselves this season. They have an explosive offense but need to improve defensively if they are to make any noise in the postseason. This deal with the Detroit Pistons would help them do that.

Jerami Grant is a player that can fit whatever need a team has. With the Denver Nuggets, he was an elite role player that starred in a part-time role. He was looking for an expanded one when he hit free agency, the Pistons provided it to him and he proved he could handle that as well.

With the Hawks, he would be asked to do a little bit of everything. He could be counted on to carry the offense while Trae Young and John Collins rested and has the skill set to fit in seamlessly alongside both of them on the court. Grant is comfortable with the ball in his hands or playing off-ball spotting up along the 3-point line.

Teams already struggle to slow down the Hawks with Clint Capela, a limited offensive player, running pick and rolls. Imagine how difficult it would be for teams to slow that down but with Grant replacing Capela. Good luck stopping a frontcourt combination that is as comfortable on the perimeter as they are in the paint above the rim.

His versatility on the defensive end is something the Hawks would love to add. Grant can defend both forward spots, virtually any wing and in some cases play some small-ball 5. He can slide down to the small forward spot as well.

Usually, a team’s depth would be depleted when surrendering two recent lottery picks and a serviceable backup guard. But, the Hawks have Kevin Huerter and Hunter still, in addition to 2021 first-round pick Jalen Johnson.

There are still plenty of assets remaining should the Hawks look to make another trade down the line to upgrade the roster again.
