Does this trade make sense for the Golden State Warriors?

Does going out and leveraging their entire future give the Golden State Warriors a better chance to win a championship now?

Absolutely!

Does it make sense for them to do so?

Probably not!

While going out and trading for Domantas Sabonis would address a key weakness in the Warriors’ frontcourt, there is really no need for Sabonis, especially given his long-term contract. The Indiana Pacers’ All-Star is making $18.5M this season, $18.5M next season and then $19.4M during the 2023-24 season, tying the Warriors down even more than they already are financially.

Domantas Sabonis’ large contract would likely prevent the Warriors from keeping Andrew Wiggins past the 2022-23 season and they could also run into problems with Jordan Poole, who is extension eligible next offseason.

Along with trying to keep guys like Damion Lee, Kevon Looney and some veterans, this move would force the Warriors to pay a lot more in taxes at the expense of losing the one thing that has made them a real contender this year — their depth.

Getting another big man could definitely help the Warriors, especially given how guys like Deandre Ayton, Nikola Jokic and other big men in this league have carved them up in the paint, but when James Wiseman returns from his knee injury, he will give the Warriors a boost defensively on the interior.

As Moses Moody and Jonathan Kuminga continue to mature and get acclimated to the Warriors’ system, they too will turn into impactful players. Maybe it will not be this season, nor next season, but Moody and Kuminga are going to shine for this team, just like Jordan Poole has in his third season this year.

Both the present and future are bright for the Golden State Warriors right now, which is why making any significant trades could be detrimental to their success. They are championship favorites right now and any trade they could make runs the risk of ruining their early season success.
