Dennis Schroder – Boston Celtics

Last season, Dennis Schroder reportedly turned down a four-year, $84M extension from the Los Angeles Lakers with the idea that he could gain a larger contract worth upwards of $100M, but Schroder’s gambling did not pay off, as he signed a one-year, $5.9M deal with the Boston Celtics this past offseason.

Schroder is not expected to remain in Boston long-term and could very well draw a lot of interest at the trade deadline not only because he is on a one-year contract, but because he has played very well in his “sixth-man” role with the Celtics.

Prior to joining the Lakers, Dennis Schroder excelled coming off-the-bench behind Chris Paul in Oklahoma City and it seems like he has really carved out a role for himself as one of the better bench players in this league.

In 23 games with the Celtics this season, 14 of which he started, Schroder has averaged 17.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 1.0 steals and has shot 44.6% from the floor, 35.8% from three-point range.

While turnover prone at times, Dennis Schroder is definitely an affordable trade target for plenty of teams across the NBA and there are a handful of teams around the league who could look to add another backcourt talent.

Not looking at cap situation, the Nets, Wizards, Heat, 76ers, Clippers, Mavericks and a few others could really use another ball-handler and facilitator in their backcourt like Schroder, which is why it is expected that Boston will look to trade him prior to the trade deadline.

On the year, Boston is just 12-10 and having a handful of trade exceptions of their own, they could very well look to replace Schroder in the rotation with someone else. The Celtics have trade exceptions of $17.1M, $9.7M, $5.09M, $500K and $370K, giving them plenty of options on how to approach the trade deadline.

Between Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, Al Horford, Robert Williams III and Josh Richardson, the Celtics are set to pay $112.1M next season, giving them really no room to re-sign Dennis Schroder to anything other than the Mid-Level Exception.

They could ultimately keep Dennis Schroder through this season if they begin to play better basketball, but Boston has other areas of the floor in which they need to add more talent. This team could use another versatile two-way player on the wing and it would not hurt to add some more frontcourt depth as well since Al Horford and Robert Williams have both missed some games this year.

Dennis Schroder has been one of the more consistent bench players in the league this season and with his value high, it would be foolish for the Celtics to pass up on the opportunity to get something for him.
