D.J. Augustin – Houston Rockets

When you look at Miami’s roster right now, the one thing that sticks out is that they do not have much backcourt depth. Kyle Lowry, Jimmy Butler, and Tyler Herro are the three main ball-handlers on this roster and they really do not have any reliable depth behind Kyle Lowry.

While this is not a major problem, it could very well become one should Lowry get hurt. Gabe Vincent, Max Strus, and Caleb Martin are not terrible bench players to have, but none of these three guys would be thrown out there on the court in big games for the Heat, especially if Lowry is in fact hurt.

D.J. Augustin is an experienced veteran in this league that could provide huge minutes for a championship contender like the Heat, but the big question with him is his contract.

Being owed $7M this season and then $7.3M next season ($333K partially guaranteed), the Heat would not be able to acquire Augustin unless they were to trade guys like Tyler Herro or P.J. Tucker away, something that is not going to happen.

Logistics-wise, the Heat are going to have a hard time coming up with a way to land D.J. Augustin in a trade near the trade deadline this season, but he is exactly the kind of guard that would fit in with this team.

For his career, he has averaged 9.6 points, 3.9 assists and has shot 37.9% from three-point range. The veteran can be a primary facilitator, he can step into three-point shots and is not afraid to do a lot of the “dirty work” defensively, much like Kyle Lowry, which is why he is the perfect backup point guard option for the Heat this season.

Verdict: Pursue
