Does this trade make sense for the Sacramento Kings?
Whether or not they get first-round value for Marvin Bagley III like they would like to, the Sacramento Kings have to be willing to part ways with Bagley before the trade deadline this year. He is not going to play for them and does not want to play for them, so they need to try and salvage some kind of value from the former No. 2 overall pick before he becomes a free agent.
After not extending his contract prior to the start of the new NBA season, Bagley will be a restricted free agent at the conclusion of the 2021-22 season, giving the Kings a chance to possibly bring him back, but Bagley himself does not want to be in Sacramento anymore.
Seeing as Taurean Prince is in the final year of his contract, he is a veteran player that can help this Kings team defensively this season and then become an unrestricted free agent, freeing up $13M in cap space for them to spend on increasing player’s contracts or other key talents they could potentially add to their roster next year.
In addition, two second-round picks, one in 2022 and one in 2024, allows the Kings to continue finding ways to add talent to their team through the draft. De’Aaron Fox, Tyrese Haliburton and Davion Mitchell are all young talents this team have struck gold on throughout the years in the draft and they need to continue finding ways to be successful via the draft.

Both Bagley and Jones do not present long-term futures to the Kings, nor do the likes of Prince and Bates-Diop, but they need to get some kind of value for Bagley this season, which is what Sacramento would be doing by making this trade with Minnesota and San Antonio.
It is not the best trade they could possibly get for Marvin Bagley III, but the Kings are going to be a team that is busy in trade talks leading up to this year’s trade deadline.
