Does this trade make sense for the San Antonio Spurs?
After missing the playoffs each of the last two seasons, the San Antonio Spurs are currently rebuilding and doing a great job in doing so. Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, Keldon Johnson, Lonnie Walker IV and others make up a very promising looking young core in San Antonio, so why would they want to blow this up right now by taking a chance on Kyrie?
There is no way that Irving would stay in San Antonio long-term and having a player option for next season, he could easily opt-out next offseason, leaving the Spurs without a franchise player and down some key assets after making this trade with Brooklyn.
In a perfect world, this trade would benefit the Spurs in terms of immediate talent to try and make a real playoff push this season with their young group, but there is just no need for them to make a deal like this.
The idea of pairing Irving with Murray in the backcourt opens up a world of possibilities for the Spurs on how to attack offensively, but it is very hard to imagine that Kyrie Irving would want to be with the Spurs. The 7x All-Star wants to be in a situation to contend for championships, something that San Antonio is still years away from.

The best thing the San Antonio Spurs can do for themselves right now is to continue developing their young core and just believe in their philosophies. Entering a new era of Spurs basketball, this team should not be willing to relinquish assets for “win-now” guys, especially someone like Irving who could leave the second that chance opens up for him.
