Does this trade make sense for the San Antonio Spurs?

It is no secret that the San Antonio Spurs are going to be looking to move Thaddeus Young this season and not playing him during their season opener against the Orlando Magic just backs this up.

Getting any kind of value they can for him right now seems to make the most sense and if the Spurs can get any future first-round pick from a trade involving Young, they should look to roll the dice.

While he did have a really solid season last year with Chicago, Young’s value is going to decline the longer he does not play because he is 33-years-old. Teams want to see that he can still contribute and be a meaningful asset to their team before trading for him, which is why San Antonio would be smart to look to get a deal done during the first month of the season.

When you look at this deal proposed above, Trey Burke and Oshae Brissett may not have long-term futures in San Antonio, but they are affordable rotational players who could actually carve out a role on this team.

The Spurs do have Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, Lonnie Walker IV, and Tre Jones in their backcourt, but adding Trey Burke as an experienced veteran shooter may not be a terrible idea, especially given that he can help these young guys out in practice.

As for Oshae Brissett, he joined the Indiana Pacers late in the season last year and played really well, finishing the season averaging 10.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and shooting 42.3% from three-point range.

Being a stretch power-forward who can get things done on both ends of the floor, Brissett is definitely a guy the Spurs could look to utilize in their frontcourt and if he does not work out, they would not be tied down to him long-term since he is on a minimum contract that is not guaranteed.

Ultimately, the Spurs would be getting some solid players from both Dallas and Indiana, but the first-round pick and second-round pick they receive is where the most value lies. The Spurs are rebuilding and as a result, the best kind of assets they can add to their organization are draft picks.

Adding another draft pick in both 2022 and 2023 allows the Spurs to not only have the opportunity to add more young talents to their roster, but potentially move around in the draft to ensure that they get the guy they have had their eyes on throughout different pre-draft processes.

Maybe there are better trades out there for the San Antonio Spurs involving Thaddeus Young, but this is not a terrible trade by any means for them if they are just looking to move him right now.
