Does this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?
This deal makes complete sense for the Dallas Mavericks because they want to trade Trey Burke. He does not fit into their plans anymore since they have Jalen Brunson and now Frank Ntilikina in their backcourt and Dallas does not want to be tied down to long-term contracts at this time.
They just extended Luka Doncic long-term and agreed to a new four-year deal with Tim Hardaway Jr., so the Mavericks really need to be careful about their cap situation moving forward.
Right now, this team is not a treu championship contender and they are going to have to find ways on how to add more talent around Doncic over the next few seasons with a limited cap.
Keeping Trey Burke only ties down more money that they could spend on key veteran talents, which is why moving him makes the most sense. They could easily acquire Iwundu and waive him, only having a dead cap of $1.8M instead of a potential $6M+ dead cap by potentially weaving Burke.

Moving on from Trey Burke is something the Mavericks intend on doing at this moment and if they can get a second-round pick for him, this would be a big win for Dallas. Getting anything for him at this point is a win and with Dallas not having much draft capital, this second-round pick could be of value to them in terms of adding more talent to their roster in the future.
