Charlotte Hornets Receive: G Trey Burke
Dallas Mavericks Receive: F Wesley Iwundu, BOS 2023 2nd Round Pick

The Charlotte Hornets acquired Wesley Iwundu in the sign-and-trade deal that sent Devonte’ Graham to the New Orleans Pelicans this offseason, but Iwundu is only owed $1.8M this season and could very well be waived within the coming weeks. The Hornets have no real need for a guy like Iwundu on the wing and they could be willing to part ways to invest in a guy like Burke.

Three-point shooting was a big part of the Hornets’ success last season, as they ranked 14th in the league in three-point shooting percentage, but they lost two of their better perimeter threats this offseason in Malik Monk and Devonte’ Graham.

Terry Rozier, Miles Bridges, and Gordon Hayward will continue being shooting threats, but having Burke on the bench is not a terrible idea for Charlotte.

He has shot 34.6% from three-point range over the course of his career and if something were to happen to Ish Smith or LaMelo Ball, the Hornets currently don’t have many options. Adding Trey Burke gives them some “insurance” should Smith or Ball get injured, while also giving the Hornets another perimeter threat.

Wesley Iwundu spent 23 games in Dallas last season and did not really see the court too much. They may very well waive him upon arrival, but he could be an athletic player they look to utilize off-the-bench.

Both forward positions are mysteries for the Mavericks heading into the 2021-22 season, as they do not really have a lot of reliable options.

As a result, Iwundu could carve out a role in the Mavs’ rotations, but really, the value coming back to Dallas in this trade is a second-round pick in 2023.

The Hornets 2023 2nd Round Pick is currently already in transit in a potential transfer deal, so the only other pick they could potentially trade in 2023 would be one they got from Boston when they acquired Gordon Hayward last offseason.

Nothing about this trade has a “wow factor” for either team, but the Mavericks want to move Trey Burke, the Hornets could need another shooter in their backcourt, so there is some potential value to be had here.
