Does this trade make sense for the Charlotte Hornets?
Moving Wesley Iwundu seems like something Charlotte would be open to doing, but they would do so in order to get down to their allowed 15-man roster. The Charlotte Hornets currently have 16 guaranteed contracts and someone will have to be traded/waived, which is why Iwundu is the prime candidate.
Trading him to Dallas for Trey Burke does bring the Hornets some value given Burke’s abilities to score at the point guard position, but he would be behind LaMelo Ball and Ish Smith in their rotation. Playing time would be scarce for Burke and the Hornets would still have the problem of having too many guys on their roster.
There really is no point for them to trade Wesley Iwundu for Trey Burke and quite honestly, this trade could wind up hurting them since Burke is under contract through next season as well.
Charlotte does have the cap space to pay Burke both this year and next year should they choose to do so, but they would be giving up a second-round pick for basically nothing.

In terms of having another backup guard, Trey Burke does hold some value, but in the grand scheme of things, the Hornets roster is fine how it is right now. This team has a chance to improve from being a play-in team in the Eastern Conference last year and with a ton of young assets, they should not be looking to bring in unwanted contracts at this time.
