San Antonio Spurs Receive: G Collin Sexton
Cleveland Cavaliers Receive: F Devin Vassell, 2022 First-Round Pick

There isn’t much to this trade as Collin Sexton is in the final year of his rookie contract. As a result, matching salary isn’t overly difficult for the San Antonio Spurs to acquire him.

The Spurs acquire Sexton in exchange for Devin Vassell and a 2022 first-round pick. For San Antonio, it is hard to imagine why they would get involved in a deal like this unless they have other ones lined up.

Right now, Dejounte Murray is the starting point guard for the team. Derrick White has battled injuries but when healthy, has been a good running mate for him in the backcourt. If neither one of them are on the move, where does Sexton fit into the mix?

Sexton is a good offensive player, averaging a career-high 24.3 points per game last season. But, he needs work as a lead ball-handler and playmaker. He averaged a career-high 4.4 assists per game as well but needs to hone his decision-making to take his offense to the next level.

Murray is working on his skills as a lead ball-handler as well, so it would make for an awkward pairing. Murray is also the far superior defensive player. Trading away last year’s first-round selection in Vassell, along with another first-round pick in 2022 isn’t the steepest price, but it goes beyond that.

In addition to the trade package, San Antonio would have to hand out a lucrative long-term deal to keep Sexton in the fold. The Spurs are as good as it gets when it comes to developing players, but they already have other options that they are doing the same with.
