The Dallas Mavericks should be aiming high when it comes to their next trade target. Things had not gone as smoothly with Kristaps Porzingis as they had hoped when they thought he would be the sidekick to Luka Doncic.

As a result, why not aim for someone that can be a consistent second option behind Doncic and fill the secondary ball-handler role as well? One player that could accomplish that is CJ McCollum.

McCollum has developed into one of the best shooting guards in the NBA. He averaged a career-high 23.1 points and 4.7 assists per game last season. McCollum is a legitimate scoring threat from anywhere on the court as he makes 39.8 percent of his 3-point attempts in his career and 82.6 percent of his foul shots.

He would take a lot of pressure off of Doncic on offense. Too often last season, Doncic would be gassed when it came to the end of the game because he was working so hard to keep the Mavericks in it. McCollum would provide relief for him, as he is more than capable of not only carrying the scoring load but running the offense as well.

McCollum also has experience playing alongside a star player in Damian Lillard. It wouldn’t be a huge adjustment playing alongside Doncic as a result, as he has thrived in a 1B role previously.
