Why New Orleans Pelicans Do This Trade
The New Orleans Pelicans have to do something to start winning some games. Keeping Zion Williamson happy, especially with the rumors floating around the NBA that his family wants him out of New Orleans, is the No. 1 goal for this front office.
Trading away Brandon Ingram is a difficult decision to make, especially when you aren’t receiving an all-world player, such as Damian Lillard, in return. But, this is a strong package that will keep New Orleans competitive and gives them more building blocks for the future.
Andrew Wiggins picked up a bad reputation while with the Minnesota Timberwolves, but he has quietly turned into a solid two-way wing. He will step right into the starting spot vacated by Brandon Ingram. His contract also runs the same length as Williamson’s, so if he proves to be a good fit the team can re-up in two years or look elsewhere for a replacement.
James Wiseman is the key piece in this return package. He could be the long-term answer at the center position alongside Williamson, especially if he can develop a consistent perimeter game. His potential is immense and is a good centerpiece to get back.

Moses Moody was one of the best shooters in this year’s draft class. That was an area of weakness for the Pelicans last season and he will help turn that around. He has prototypical two-way wing size, which would help New Orleans as they struggled defensively last season as well.
The Pelicans are getting back a second-round pick in 2022 via the Toronto Raptors in this deal, but could probably squeeze a first-rounder out of the Warriors given Ingram’s credentials compared to the players coming back to the Big Easy.
