Would this trade make sense for the Memphis Grizzlies?

The Memphis Grizzlies came into the offseason riding high. They made an unexpected run to the postseason, even winning Game 1 against the Utah Jazz in their first-round matchup. It was widely expected they would add some veterans to the roster to help continue their development, but they seem to have taken a different approach.

Memphis traded away Grayson Allen and Jonas Valanciunas, two of their key contributors in the postseason. Now, there are rumors they could trade Dillon Brooks and Kyle Anderson, two starters from last season’s team.

While it would be surprising to see them trade away even more offensive firepower, something they were lacking in already, in Brooks, this deal with the Golden State Warriors does make sense for them.

Cashing in on a player when their value is highest is something smaller market teams have to do, and that is what Memphis is doing here with Brooks. Given his contract, as he is owed a reasonable $23.6 million for the next two seasons, and production, now is the time to cash in on a trade.

Memphis isn’t a popular destination for free agents, so when you have a chance to land a player with the potential of James Wiseman, you have to take a chance. Brooks is a good player, but he seemingly doesn’t have the All-Star potential that Wiseman does.

Wiseman would make for an excellent long-term core alongside Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. As long as Jackson can get back on track after some injury woes, the Grizzlies would have a formidable trio to build around for the future.
