Does this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?

In terms of getting talent in return or draft picks, this trade definitely makes sense for the Dallas Mavericks during the 2021-22 season, but it could wind up hurting them long-term.

Seeing as he is in the final year of his contract, Kyle Anderson would surely not be in the Mavericks’ long-term plans at this point, which is why this trade would act as a “one-year rental” kind of deal for Dallas.

Adding Anderson to their rotation with other guys like Dorian Finney-Smith, Maxi Kleber and now Reggie Bullock at the forward positions definitely aids the Mavs, but overall, is he really the difference in them being true contenders in the Western Conference? To me, the simple answer is no, which is why the Mavericks may look elsewhere to make a possible trade this upcoming season.

Their draft capital is thin as it is and giving up another future first-round pick, as well as a second-round pick next year, would leave Dallas with less chances to add young talent to their roster. Josh Green is a young talent they are high on and we all know what Luka Doncic can do, but the Mavericks really do not have any young talents on their roster.

They just extended Tim Hardaway Jr. long-term, Kristaps Porzingis is owed over $100M over the next three seasons and Luka Doncic just agreed to a long-term contract extension, so there are not many opportunities for this team to add more talent over the next few seasons.

Getting Kyle Anderson is definitely a solid move to make their second-unit and secondary talent better, but this team is in need of another All-Star caliber player, which Anderson is not.

Maybe we could see the Mavericks trade for another key role player, but they likely would not do so until near the NBA trade deadline. The Grizzlies want to make a trade rather quickly to free up a roster spot, so this may not be a trade we wind up seeing the Mavericks be too interested in.
