Dallas Mavericks Receive: F Kyle Anderson
Memphis Grizzlies Receive: DAL 2022 2nd Round Pick, DAL 2024 1st Round Pick (Top-5 Protected)

As of right now, Dallas is sitting at 15 players under-contract and they have finalized their 20-man training camp roster, but they could wind up dumping a player in a separate trade or just waiving one entirely to get a deal done for Anderson.

Seeing as Memphis is looking to trade away a salary and free up a roster spot, they are not going to want to take a player back in return from Dallas either, which is why they would only be getting draft compensation and possibly future cash considerations in this deal for Kyle Anderson.

Whether or not this is good enough for them to deal Anderson is another question that will be answered shortly, but case and point, Memphis would be able to free up nearly $10M in salaries by dealing Anderson to the Dallas Mavericks and they would free up that roster spot they so desperately need right now.

When you look at the Mavericks, their roster is pretty much set-in-stone at this point, but they could still a) look to move a contract in another trade, or b) look to waive Moses Brown, who was acquired from Boston, who acquired him from Oklahoma City this offseason.

Brown’s contract is partially-guaranteed for $500,000 this season, but the Mavericks have four other big men under-contract for the 2021-22 season, so they may not hold onto Moses Brown much longer.

If anybody was to be moved in a separate trade, it would most likely be either him again or possibly Dwight Powell, who is owed nearly $11M this upcoming season and in 2022-23. Bringing in Kyle Anderson definitely has its advantages for Dallas though, especially since he can play either the small-forward or power-forward positions.

Last season in Memphis, Kyle Anderson averaged 12.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.2 steals and shot 46.8% from the floor, 36.0% from three-point range, making him a versatile forward that the Mavericks could look to utilize in many different ways. Luka Doncic is a fantastic player, but unless they surround him with other key talents, they will not be as successful as they hope in the postseason.

So would the Memphis Grizzlies be willing to give up their veteran forward for some draft picks and do the Mavericks have the ability to take on Anderson’s salary for the 2021-22 season? Let’s take a look at this deal from both team’s perspective to see if it is a trade that we could wind up seeing in the near future.
