Dallas Mavericks Receive: G Goran Dragic
Toronto Raptors Receive: C Dwight Powell, G Trey Burke

If the Dallas Mavericks were to take on Goran Dragic’s $19.4M contract for next season, then they would most definitely have to move Dwight Powell, something they should be willing to do. Powell has two years and $22.1M remaining on his contract and the Raptors do have some needs in their frontcourt, which is why they could be willing to take on his salary.

Back in January 2020, Dwight Powell suffered a significant Achilles injury that kept him out of action until this past 2020-21 season. Since suffering this injury, Powell has not been the same impactful big man he once was and with the Mavericks having Kristaps Porzingis, Willie Cauley-Stein, Boban Marjanovic and Moses Brown as well, they can definitely get away with movin Powell.

Another reason why the Mavericks could look to move Powell and even Trey Burke now is so they are not tied down to contracts past this season.

Absorbing Dragic’s one-year contract would definitely affect them financially during the 2021-22 season, but Luka Doncic is going to be getting a major max contract extension from his rookie deal, which would go into effect starting in the 2022-23 season.

Freeing up cap space moving forward is going to be something the Mavericks look to do, especially since Doncic, Porzingis and Hardaway Jr. will be under contract long-term. If the Raptors are willing to take back Powell and Burke at the expense of Goran Dragic, this would be a smart move for Dallas.

With this said, let’s take a closer look at this deal from each team’s perspective and see if this is a deal that makes sense for both the Dallas Mavericks and Toronto Raptors.
