Does this trade make sense for the Minnesota Timberwolves?
While he is 33-years-old now, Thaddeus Young is a very under-appreciated player. Since he entered the league in 2007, Young has always been a consistent contributor for his team’s frontcourt and he has continued to prove to be an asset for five different NBA franchises now.
In fact, Thad Young has already proven to be a reliable asset in Minnesota, as he spent 48 games with the Timberwolves during the 2014-15 season averaging 14.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and shooting 45.1% from the floor.
Since he is older now and not the dynamic player he used to be in the low-post, Young has expanded his game and is actually a really solid playmaker. He can make plays for himself and others from the top-of-the-key or in the low-post, which is why the Timberwolves need him.
Outside of Karl-Anthony Towns, the Timberwolves have no immediate contributors in their frontcourt. Jaden McDaniels, a first-round pick from last year’s draft, is definitely going to grow into a really solid contributor in time, but he could learn a lot from Minnesota bringing in a guy like Thaddeus Young.

He can help the Timberwolves win games now, he can contribute offensively and he can help grow some of the young talents on this roster, so there really is no reason why Minnesota should not try to get this deal done with the Spurs. Jarrett Culver is a player they are definitely interested in moving and they really should not be too concerned about trading away some second-round picks for a productive frontcourt piece.
