Does this trade make sense for the Atlanta Hawks?
If the Atlanta Hawks are going to lose John Collins in free agency, they might as well get something of value for him! Landing Derrick White would be a great move for the Hawks in terms of adding another high-level backcourt talent, but overall, losing John Collins would be detrimental to this franchise.
His value to Atlanta is highly overshadowed by the likes of Trae Young and Clint Capela, but taking Collins off of this Hawks team would immediately set them back. They do not have anybody that can replicate his production at the power-forward position and losing Collins throws off the whole chemistry of this Hawks team.
Over the last handful of years, the Hawks have slowly been building a young, versatile and sustainable team, so why would they want to throw all of this out the door, especially after they just made it to the Eastern Conference Finals!
Giving up John Collins makes no sense for the Hawks, which is why they need to go “all-in” on keeping him long-term. The young forward has earned his next paycheck from Atlanta and they should want to keep him given all the things he does to help them win.

Collins can score in the low-post, he can shoot from the perimeter, he can sky over his opponents for rebounds and he is actually a pretty decent low-post defender, which is why the Hawks cannot afford to lose him this offseason. If he wants to sign elsewhere, then executing a sign-and-trading is a smart move for Atlanta to try and salvage value, but losing John Collins would be a huge, irreplaceable loss for the Hawks.
