Dallas Mavericks Receive: G Bradley Beal
Washington Wizards Receive: F Kristaps Porzingis, G Jalen Brunson, G Josh Green, two future unprotected first-round picks

Kristaps Porzingis has played 100 regular season games and 10 playoff games in a Mavericks’ uniform, yet he really has not been special. He has average 20.3 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and has shot 36.2% from three-point range, which makes things look like he has played well, but Porzingis has been very underwhelming for Dallas when they need him to step up.

Being 7’3”, you would think Kristaps Porzingis would do a lot of his “dirty work” in the paint, yet he acts like a 6’0” guard who only shoots threes on the perimeter.

Maybe this is all mental and Porzingis is afraid to be physical in the paint after suffering a major knee injury in 2018, but whatever the case may be, he has become a guy that is more of a liability for the Mavericks when he is on the court than a contributor.

Dallas has made the Latvian big man available in trade talks this offseason, but his market has not been that vast. Some teams have inquired about him, but he is owed $101.5M over the next three seasons, which is not ideal for any team possibly looking to trade for him.

Washington may be a good fit for Kristaps Porzingis given that he can stretch the floor and open up space for Russell Westbrook to do what he does attacking the rim, but again, is he someone that the Wizards really want to be tied down to long-term?

Unless Bradley Beal requests a trade, it is really hard to imagine that Washington would want Porzingis over Beal. Of course, if that were to happen, it would be something to takes NBA trade rumors by storm and we’d absolutely be hearing about it.

Along with Porzingis in this trade proposal, the Wizards would also receive two young and talented players in Jalen Brunson and Josh Green. Both guys definitely hold some value, but again, neither of these guys have the potential to grow into a player like Bradley Beal, nor can they really help make a difference for the Wizards now.

The last part of this trade package involves two unprotected future first-round picks, but Dallas could run into some problems figuring out which picks to trade. They do not have any first-round picks in the 2021 NBA Draft and they traded away their 2023 1st Round Pick in the past, which is why figuring out which picks would go to Washington could end up being a problem.

Due to the Stepien Rule, teams are not allowed to trade away draft picks in consecutive years, but teams have found loopholes with the rules in terms of trading away pick swaps and protections on picks. However, in this trade proposal, the Mavericks would be sending Washignton two unprotected first-round picks, which would mean the earliest of picks the Mavs could trade away unprotected are in 2025 and 2027 or in 2026 and 2028.

Whatever the case may be, the Wizards are going to want immediate compensation for Bradley Beal, which is why two unprotected picks may not be enough and Washington may have to gamble on obtaining Dallas’ picks with some small protections on them.

A Bradley Beal to Dallas trade package is very complicated and given the position the Mavs are in, they truly may not have the assets Washington is searching for long-term. With that said, let’s take a look at this trade from both team’s perspective to see if it makes sense or not.
