Does this trade make sense for the Orlando Magic?
If Orlando is sold on the idea of adding Cade Cunningham to their roster, even though they have Markelle Fultz, Cole Anthony and Michael Carter-Williams in their backcourt, then they should absolutely look to leverage their assets in order to move up.
Giving up the 5th and 8th picks in the 2021 NBA Draft to get the 1st overall pick is definitely worthwhile for the Magic, but Detroit may need more value.
This trade proposal definitely seems like fair value, but the Pistons may still want more future draft picks, which could make things complicated for the Magic. Orlando is in a position where they do not need to move up in the draft, but doing so gives them that “franchise-altering” player that they so desperately need.
Right now, Markelle Fultz and Jonathan Isaac are the focal points of the Magic’s rebuild process, but with both of them coming off major knee injuries, there are a lot of questions about if Orlando has the right building blocks in place right now. Just based off of first glance, it appears that they do, but there are a lot of questions about this Magic roster.

Adding Cade Cunningham would give the Magic a focal point to build with and around for years to come, which is why they should do everything they can to move up in the 2021 NBA Draft and get the #1 overall pick. Even if Detroit wants more future assets, Orlando should be willing to do so because they have not had a top-tier, young talent in a while.
They have had some really good players over the years, but Orlando really has not had talents like Dwight Howard, Shaquille O’Neal or Tracy McGrady in a while. Finding the next “superstar” talent to build with is essential for the Orlando Magic and trading up gives them the ability to draft said player.

This trade proposal with the Detroit Pistons forces the Magic to give up a fair amount of value in three draft picks this year and a young talent in R.J. Hampton, but Cade Cunningham is a “franchise-altering” talent that would make the rebuild process in Orlando go very smooth.
