Does this trade make sense for the Detroit Pistons?

It’s safe to say that the Pistons aren’t going to be competing for an NBA title anytime soon. Detroit is amid a full rebuild, and Jerami Grant is the highest-paid player on their roster. Even with how Grant performed in an expanded role in 2020-21, the Pistons have to realize that if they can acquire more future assets, trading some of their best players right now isn’t going to hurt them much.

No offense to Jerami Grant, but even after notching 22.3 points per game this season, he isn’t a No. 1 option in today’s NBA. Taking that into consideration, being able to get a young player like Hutchison in return would give them another guy that could compete for a role on the roster. Hutchison hasn’t had a defined role in either of his stops with the Bulls or Wizards, but he’s shown he can be a solid role player on the right team.

Along with Hutchison, Bertans would give them a streaky three-point shooter that can catch fire at any moment. Also, inheriting an expensive contract like Bertans’ wouldn’t affect Detroit much due to their current outlook.

For the Pistons, getting another first-round pick — the 15th overall pick to be exact — would be an enticing aspect of the trade. While Grant is a talented player, Detroit understands that they are going to win anything while he is under contract with the organization. There’s a chance that the Pistons could get more in other trades, but Washington could be a team that makes an intriguing offer this summer.
