What to expect from the Spurs this offseason?
Overall, the Spurs have a lot of business to take care of this offseason. Not only do they need to focus their attention on the 2021 NBA Draft and NBA free agency, but they will also have to face the “elephant in the room” of Gregg Popovich not getting any younger. Popovich will be entering his 26th season with the Spurs next year and is now 72-years-old, which is why every year has a chance to be his “final rodeo,” as they call it in Texas!
There is some talk that he may retire this offseason, but then again, it is Gregg Popovich and you just never know what he is going to say until he is in front of a microphone! If this is truly the end of Popovich’s career, then he will surely be remembered as one of, if not the greatest coach in NBA history.

He has spent all 25 years of his head coaching career with the same team, posting 1310 career wins, the third most by a coach in the NBA all-time, and winning five championships with the Spurs, tied for the third most championships won by a head coach all-time. If he does return to the Spurs for a 26th season though, he will likely pass the great Don Nelson (1335 wins) for the most wins by a head coach in NBA history.
From the future of Gregg Popovich to the pending NBA free agency of DeMar DeRozan, the Spurs will have a lot to deal with this offseason, but at the end of the day, they will be just fine. Dejounte Murray and Derrick White are the young leaders of this team and with the chance to bring in another high-level, young player with the 11th overall pick, the Spurs are going to be one of the fiercest, young teams in the league next year.

All Spurs fans have known over the years are championships and being in the playoffs, so all of this “rebuild stuff” is new to them, but this will not be the narrative for long. The end of eras always come at some point, but for the Spurs, this is just the beginning of a new era!
San Antonio is going to be an aggressive team to watch in NBA free agency this year and for anybody who knows how the Spurs front-office works, it should not be surprising to see them “pull out a wild card from up their sleeves” in the offseason!
