2021 NBA DRAFT

Owned Draft Picks: Own 2021 1st Round Pick (Pick #12 Pending Lottery), Own 2021 2nd Round Pick (Pick #41)

Every team in the NBA has learned something over time from the San Antonio Spurs organization and one thing many teams have learned is how to build a team through the NBA Draft. No team drafts better than the Spurs do and while they may not bring in “flashy” names, they draft and develop better than any other team in the league.

They did so with their “Big 3” back in the day with Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan and they will do so again with time. Outside of DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay and Patty Mills on their roster this year, the rest of the Spurs roster was very young.

Heading into next season, the oldest player under contract for the Spurs is Derrick White and he will be turning 27-years-old in July. This is a very young, athletic, and hungry group of guys on the Spurs roster and they are going to be adding even more talent this year when the draft rolls around.

San Antonio has a 8.1% chance of moving up within the Top-4 in this year’s draft, but they will likely end up with the 12th pick in this year’s draft once the lottery determines the remaining draft order. Last year in the lottery, the Spurs drafted Devin Vassell with the 11th overall pick and this year, they will be looking to add more talent, primarily to their frontcourt.

Some players that will likely be on the board and draw some interest from San Antonio include: F Jalen Johnson (Duke), F Corey Kispert (Gonzaga), C Alperen Sengun (Turkey), F Franz Wagner (Michigan) and F/C Kai Jones (Texas), among others as well.

With a steady backcourt and Jakob Poeltl emerging as a reliable center this past year, it seems highly likely that the Spurs will focus their attention to either adding a shooter on the wing or finding another guy that can play in the low-post at the power-forward position. There is an opportunity for the Spurs to trade down and acquire more assets for the future, but if there is a guy that falls outside the Top-10 that they really like, then they will definitely be keeping this pick.

The NBA Draft has always been a means for the Spurs to add to their talented roster and this offseason is no different for them. San Antonio is going to be adding another highly skilled, young player to their roster and whoever it is, they will most likely have an immediate impact on this team.
