For starters, he is still relatively young at only 26 years old. He isn’t too far off from Minnesota’s rebuilding timeline should he play well enough to earn a multi-year contract. His skillset would also fit alongside the core players in Minnesota.
He could play power forward alongside Towns or be his backup. His ability to stretch the floor would be nice, as he knocked down 47.1 percent of his 3-point attempts this season with the Milwaukee Bucks and is a 38 percent shooter in his career.
Portis would also bring some defense to the frontcourt. The Bucks’ defensive rating was 1.3 points worse without Portis on the court. His 108.3 defensive rating would have been better than every Timberwolves player during the 2020-21 season other than Jake Layman.
