Why Davion Mitchell should be considered a top 10 pick

Raymond Carlin III-USA TODAY Sports

Perimeter shooting is a major advantage for Mitchell

The strides Davion Mitchell has made as a perimeter shooter are quite impressive and this past year with Baylor, he shot upwards of 44.7% from three-point range! This ranked him 23rd in the country in three-point shooting percentage and 7th in three-point shooting percentage (min 100 shot attempts).

He will enter the NBA as a “3-and-D” guard, which is exactly the type of player every team is currently looking for. Guys who can play with a high-motor on both ends of the court and knock down perimeter shots are extremely valuable in today’s NBA, which is exactly why Davion Mitchell has turned himself into a top-tier draft pick.

Both his true shooting percentage and effective field goal percentage were over 60% on the season, which are way above the college average and given he really has no “cold spots” on the perimeter, Mitchell is ready to contribute immediately in the NBA.

Free-throw shooting can be a problem for the 22-year-old guard, as he only shot 41-64 (64.1%) from the line this season, but that is definitely something that can be worked on and improved. This should not take away though from Mitchell’s ability to be a high-level threat from distance.

Desmond Bane is a rookie for the Grizzlies this year that has made a name for himself being a “3-and-D” type of player, which is exactly why Davion Mitchell can join a team and immediately make a big impact with them.
