Does this trade make sense for the Minnesota Timberwolves?

Trading D’Angelo Russell may be a really good move for the Timberwolves this offseason and quite honestly, trading him for Ross and Carter-Williams is not a bad deal at all. D’Angelo Russell’s value is starting to go down with him being injured and while he is still worth something, the Timberwolves could get two guys that could come in and contribute immediately in the second-unit. 

Overall, the Timberwolves do not have that bad of a team without D’Angelo Russell, it will just take time for them to put things together. With Towns, Edwards, Beasley and McDaniels all healthy and on the court, along with other key role players on the bench, the T-Wolves are not far off from being a team that can play with anyone night-in and night-out. 

All they need to do is execute a little better, which is why bringing in Ross and Carter-Williams makes a lot of sense. Terrence Ross is one of the better bench scorers in the league, giving Minnesota a much needed second-unit scorer and Michael Carter-Williams is a very versatile point guard that could be great backing up Ricky Rubio. 

Giving up a first-round pick along with D’Angelo Russell in this deal may not be ideal, but it may be what it takes for this trade to get done. The Magic will want some kind of insurance/protection for themselves should Russell not be the player they hope he is, which is why they would be getting/want a first-round pick in this deal.

Given the lack of talent outside of their core group, this trade makes a lot of sense for the Minnesota Timberwolves and should be an idea they entertain in the offseason. There are more pros to trading D’Angelo Russell than there are cons, which is why getting rid of him, even though he has not played much for them, could be the right move to achieve the most future success.
