Why This Trade Makes Sense For The Boston Celtics
This is a good trade for the Boston Celtics because they are able to land an All Star point guard to solve their game management concerns. The Celtics like that they have Kemba Walker, but he has failed to pan out to the four year 170 million dollar contract that they gave him back in 2019.
Sure, the Celtics may have to pay John Wall a bit more per season, but the fact that he is under contract for one less season than Kemba Walker gives the Celtics more of a risk free addition, especially when you consider the fact that he has produced very well on two different teams in his career.
The Celtics would also be able to place their underwhelming players in Tristan Thompson and Kemba Walker’s burdens on the rebuilding Houston Rockets, which is always a great thing to do. With the long-term concerns they have about Walker’s knee durability, taking a chance on a non-Russell Westbrook point guard with a bad contract like John Wall would be a logical option.

The Celtics are thought of as being a contending team with a great core of talent and trying their luck with a different point guard could help. Taking a flier on John Wall would be a risk for Boston. He hasn’t been overly impactful during his first season back from two season-ending injuries, but there is a train of thought that he could hit the ground running in 2021-22 after having a full offseason to get better.
A big three of John Wall, Jayson Tatum, and Jaylen Brown would be just as hard to contain as it sounds.
