Why This Trade Would Benefit The Toronto Raptors
This all comes down to what Toronto feels is the best move for lower in the future. If they are going to sign him, they will get a bargain but he is also playing at a high-level which means they can still get a big return. That could be the goal here in a trade like this.
The main priority in the off-season in Toronto was to sign Fred VanVleet long-term. The two sides were able to agree on a four year, $80 million contract in free agency. Vanvleet and Pascal Siakam are now the centerpiece players for the Raptors.
They lost some key members of the team in Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka in free agency. The team has shown ill effects but could look to make a deal that would benefit them moving forward.

This trade does not seem like a team that is trying to work toward the postseason. It seems like Toronto would just be dumping a big contract and an expiring one hour. Will be interesting to see what Masai Ujiri every decides to do with one of his best players for close to a decade.
