Why This Trade Would Benefit The OKC Thunder

The OKC Thunder has fallen behind in the Western Conference, which was to be expected after they sent Chris Paul to Phoenix. The Thunder are in a rebuilding phase and have built up draft capital in trades. In recent years, the Thunder have sent away players like Paul, Russell Westbrook, and Paul George. Sam Presti has a plan and this move could continue it.

Horford has $80 million left on his contract over the next three years, including this one. The Thunder are not in a position to invest this much in a big man who is not a long-term option.

Instead, they would benefit from adding three intriguing prospects to team up with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. He is the centerpiece player for the Thunder in the future and it is about putting the right players around him. Presti has built draft capital and now it is about shedding contract.
