Blake Griffin

Buyout Landing Spot: Brooklyn Nets

While we are talking about the NBA trade deadline and team’s trading for some of the “star players’ available, Blake Griffin’s situation is a little different. The Pistons’ forward is likely to be bought out at some point in the coming weeks, which is realistically the only way the Pistons can get him off their roster.

Blake Griffin is owed $36.5M this season and $39M next season, assuming he opts into his player option, which he would be foolish not to do. No team is going to be willing to pay Griffin this kind of money, nor is he worth this kind of money any more in terms of production on the court, which is why Detroit is likely going to buy-out his contract.

No team wants to trade for Blake Griffin, but they would very much be interested in signing him to a small contract. Any team that would sign Griffin would likely sign him to a one-year deal and those teams interested in him would all likely be legit playoff teams this season.

The Brooklyn Nets would definitely be an ideal spot for the veteran forward because of their lack of depth in their frontcourt and their chances of winning a title this year. In the event that Blake Griffin’s contract gets bought out by the Pistons and he becomes a free agent, he is going to want to go to a real championship contender, so why not sign a minimum contract with Brooklyn?

They are arguably the best team in the Eastern Conference and with their lack of players in the frontcourt, Griffin would easily be able to play 20+ minutes per game. He may not be the player he once was, but can still make a positive impact in the second-unit for Brooklyn. That’s why this will be an intriguing storyline to watch in NBA rumors.

This would be a great signing by the Nets if they could get Griffin to agree to a minimum contract and it would be the only way they could add him to their roster. They are already $57.4M over the salary cap and do not have any salary space to sign anyone to any contract other than a one-year minimum contract.

Since nobody wants to absorb Griffin’s massive contract, the only way for the Pistons to get him off their roster is to buyout his contract and let him sign elsewhere. This is also the only way the Brooklyn Nets can get Blake Griffin and add him to their already championship caliber roster.
