Why This Trade Makes Sense For The Orlando Magic

With the Orlando Magic’s playoff hopes slowly dinishinging and not much talent on their roster to begin with, it would make sense for them to want to acquire as many draft picks as possible. Nikola Vucevic and Evan Fournier are two solid, experienced players and there is some younger talent on this roster in Cole Anthony, Markelle Fultz, Jonathan Isaac and Dwayne Bacon, but until this team is 100% healthy, they are nothing more than a team that will be picking in the lottery this season.

The best thing this organization can do is trade a guy like Terrence Ross, who does have a longer contract, free up cap space and acquire draft picks at the same time. Not only does this give the Magic leverage when it comes to pursuing free agents moving forward, but it gives them the opportunity to continue drafting high-level, young talent.

Danny Green could definitely be utilized by the Magic this season, as he is in the final year of his contract, but the cap space he would free up could be highly coveted by Orlando. The Magic are tight on cap space as it is and freeing up nearly $15M from Green’s contract at the end of the year could give them the opportunity to sign another high-level talent to pair with Vucevic.

While he has not played much in his young career, Terrance Ferguson is still just 22-years old and has a lot of potential to grow into a solid wing because of his athleticism. He is a lot like Terrence Ross in a way because of his athletic nature and ability to score off-the-dribble.

Gaining a young wing and some draft picks for the upcoming years could prove to be very beneficial for a franchise that is currently searching for answers. Even if this team makes the playoffs, they are nothing more than a team that will get demolished in the first-round, which is why the Magic should take a step back and continue building for the future rather than trying to win games now.
