Why This Trade Makes Sense For The Orlando Magic

There was a lot of hype surrounding Aaron Gordon when he first entered the NBA as the 4th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Magic and while he struggled early on in his career, Gordon has really turned himself into a solid third or fourth scoring option. His outside shot is finally starting to improve and he has improved as a defender, but it does not seem like he is a guy the Magic feels comfortable investing a lot of money into for the future of the organization.

Nikola Vucevic and Evan Fournier seem like the two older guys the Magic will invest into while they build their young core of the future, leaving Gordon in a tough spot. His playstyle is not something the Magic seem to want to build around and given the fact that he cannot be the top scoring option on a team is concerning for Orlando moving forward.

Trading both Gordon and Ross for two second-round picks and Andrew Wiggins could make a lot of sense for this organization given that Wiggins is a more gifted wing than Ross and has a lot of potential to possibly grow into an All-Star talent. Not to mention, these two second-round picks over the next two years could be packaged together in order for the Magic to acquire another first-round pick in 2021.

The biggest thing this organization needs right now is an all-around playmaker and while Terrence Ross has been their leading scorer early on in the year, he is not the future of the Magic. Nikola Vucevic needs another high-level scorer next to him if this team is going to do anything in the near future in terms of playoff production, which is why they need to trade for Andrew Wiggins.

Last season, Andrew Wiggins had one of the better offensive years of his career, playing in a total of 54 games for both the T-Wolves and the Warriors and averaged 21.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists and shot 44.7% from the floor. His athleticism paired with some of the other young athletes on the team in Cole Anthony and Chuma Okeke could make the Magic a young, fast-paced and defensive oriented team.

Unloading two aging contracts for a solidified young talent is exactly what the Orlando Magic need to do and while it could affect them in terms of frontcourt depth this year, acquiring Andrew Wiggins sets the Magic up for success moving forward.
